Cyberjaya, Malaysia – June 25, 2025
The tragic death of a young Sarawakian student, Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara, has left netizens and the public reeling in shock and sorrow across Malaysia. A memorial notice and a wave of emotional tributes circulating online have shed light on a deeply unsettling incident reportedly involving sexual assault at a university hostel.
The 19-year-old from Kuching, Sarawak, was a student at the University of Cyberjaya. Her passing on June 24, 2025, has sparked widespread outrage, especially as unconfirmed social media posts allege she was a victim of a recent rape case within the university premises.
A touching obituary describes Maniishapriet as “a devoted daughter, a caring sister and much loved and cherished granddaughter, niece and cousin.” Her last rites were held on June 26, while the Path Da Bhog is scheduled for July 6 in Gurdwara Sahib Kuching.
The response on social media has been overwhelming, with many expressing their grief and fury. One user, Naresh (@naresh__off_), stated bluntly, “University of Cyberjaya .. recent rape case in Malaysia! The girl from Kuching, Sarawak. RIP.”
Another emotional post from Balraj Singh (@balraj2610) reads:
“Rest in peace, Manisha. How did all of this even happen? She was just a student, with all her dreams came from Kuching to study in University of Cyberjaya. They failed to protect her. She was not living in some private accommodation but in the college hostel!”
The emotional toll has resonated deeply among peers and alumni. Shahricher (@shahfizall) lamented, “The injustice of it all gnaws at my heart, leaving me feeling both broken and powerless.”
While official statements from authorities and the university are still pending, the widespread outcry on social media points to a growing demand for accountability, campus safety reforms, and justice for Maniishapriet.
The tragic incident has reopened critical conversations about women’s safety in educational institutions and the need for stricter protective measures within campus environments.
